The look on Konstatine’s face 😳 when Dominic said, “The lesson of history is your neighbors will probably try to kill and eat you, so make sure you kill and eat them first” 😂

As Norm McDonald said once, “Hey, I just read this history book, and wouldn’t you know it, it says the good guys won every single time… what are the odds…?”

As a former probation officer, I can confirm that people who commit horrific acts against others nearly always have a story about how they are the hero or the victim, almost never do they recognise themselves as the bad guy

As a South African I have to say I have many times told my friends in Europe and US that they have no idea what humans can do to other humans

Dominic Sandbrook showing that Stem subjects are not the be all and end all . History scholars are so so important in the fabric of a free and civilised society. The profound lack of critical thinking on social media at large shows in itself why we have so much to learn from historians. Huge respect!

One of my favorite anecdotes is about a Jewish man that survived the Nazi Holocaust. He was finally given a chance to face his accuser, and when he came face-to-face with him, he immediately fainted to the floor. After a while when he was revived, people asked him why he fainted. They asked him was it the horror of everything that was done to him coming back? He said no that wasn’t it. He said what struck him was that when he looked into the eyes of his tormentor, he realized that he was capable of doing to his tormentor exactly what was done to him. The very same violent monster dwelled within him.

The main thing about Dominic Sandbrook's presentation of history with Tom Holland on their channel is they share a devilish sense of humor with a focus on story telling that makes them very addictive listening. They deserve all the success that has come their way.

I really enjoyed this episode. Our father, who was born in 1929, told us as children in the 1970’s that ‘you have no idea how lucky you are to grow up in a time of relative peace’. We were too young at the time to understand what he meant.

I’m 24, Ive been telling people since high school that the idea around history that’s mostly prominent today is as if we’ve grown beyond the tragedies. If anything, the innovations that have been made have only made it easier to oppress people given the desire.

I wish this conversation was played in every history class around the world. I really appreciate the clear articulation of how history should be viewed and the pitfalls we need to be careful to avoid.

Dominic's example of Germany in 1910 was a chilling example of how the future is unknowable. Just when you think life is pretty good it can take a very nasty turn.
