Never in a million years would I have guessed that single columns of LEDs and oscillating mirrors were how this thing worked. Honestly super impressive!

8:50 Thanks for the USB sounds, Gav. Nearly went insane hunting for what was broken on my rig.

4:35 I think the reason for alternating mirror movements, is to cancel out each others rotational velocity.
If they were synced up, the headset would vibrate CRAZY much.

I still have my Virtual Boy with 7 games! It is still my favorite console because of one special thing, I am 100% blind in my left eye due to the very rare Coats Disease (this happened when I was 8, long before I ever started gaming). Why does that matter you ask? Well, all I have to do is move the visual slider all the way to right and BOOM! No visual nausea, no eyestrain, all in glorious 64 bit w/surround sound. Kind of like a high resolution Gameboy screen. Wario Land, Galactic Pinball and Teleroboxer are among my favorites!

8:00 Having LEDs illuminated for longer or shorter periods of time to make the pixel "brighter" is called "Pulse width modulation" and is standard practice with LEDs. LEDs run at a specific voltage and to "dim" one you can't just reduce the voltage, so instead they are switched on and off faster than the eye can detect, and to make the light dimmer you increase the amount of time the LED is off.
