Are the US and EU headed for a trade war over Greenland? | DW News

Open in YouTube
European Union diplomats say the bloc is ready to hit the US with retaliatory tariffs. That's if Donald Trump makes good on his threats of tariffs against countries that oppose a US takeover of Greenland. European leaders are trying to convince the US president to drop the idea. Trump claimed in a Truth Social post on Sunday that Denmark hadn't done enough to counter the Russian threat to Greenland, adding: "It will be done." And in response to the the tariff threats from Washington, EU diplomats meeting on Sunday said the bloc was considering countermeasures of its own. They're reported to be worth some 93 billion euros. Leaders will discuss what options they have at an emergency summit later this week. Earlier, Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said Europe would not yield to pressure and blackmail. And French President Emmanuel Macron urged the EU to consider an even stronger reaction - an option nicknamed the "trade bazooka." The Anti-Coercion Instrument would target US goods and services and restrict access to the European single market. 00:00 European leaders discuss retaliatory tariffs against the US 03:24 DW speaks with Carsten Brzeski, Chief Economist of ING Germany For more news go to: http://www.dw.com/en/ Follow DW on social media: ►Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dwnews ►TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@dwnews ►Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/deutschewellenews/ ►Twitter: https://twitter.com/dwnews Für Videos in deutscher Sprache besuchen Sie: https://www.youtube.com/dwdeutsch Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/user/deutschewelleenglish?sub_confirmation=1 #Greenland #Trump #Tariffs

US are basically saying they need to steal Greenland before someone else does. It's like stealing your neighbours car because otherwise it might get stolen by someone else. They take us for fools!

History shows that giving in to threats and blackmail never leads to anything good. Appeasement only encourages more pressure. That’s why firm boundaries should be set from the very beginning.

It‘s high time that Europeans developed their own versions of Microsoft and Google.

Asking the question "Who will win" demonstrates a lack of knowledge about trade. No one wins.

The EU needs California, and we're going to get it, or we'll squeeze the US with tariffs.

A lot of what we buy from USA is not neccesary. We the people of Europe can stop buying what we can buy elsewhere.

I think we are ready as europeans to draw a line, and deal with the consequences now. This man is just insane. He wrote to the nobel peace price commity that "since he did not get the nobel peace price", he cannot promise to be nice to Denmark. That is just so incredibly weird.

Trump wants to "protect Greenland from Russia", but Russia is publicly celebrating his threats on state media. How strange!

Canada here.🍁🇨🇦 Canadians overwhelmingly support Greenland and Denmark and Europe. When Trump made his 51st State comments and imposed tariffs on Canada, a grassroots movement started to boycott American products and travel to the United States. Additionally, most provinces have removed American alcohol from their shelves. That has had a real impact on the businesses that depend on exports and tourism. Canada is a small country compared to the EU, so imagine the impact on American tourism and exports of alcohol and other products if the ordinary people of Europe decided to not purchase American products and stop travelling to the USA for a vacation. It will be huge. Elbows Up Europe! 🇨🇦🍁

The US has 800 military bases all over the world, yet is the country that always sees security threats everywhere. Turns out the US was the biggest security threat all along.
