The next stage of capitalism | Yanis Varoufakis on technofeudalism and the fall of democracy | IAI

The Institute of Art and Ideas

Yanis Varoufakis explains the evolution of capitalism, from its beginnings in feudal Europe to its imminent death in the era of Big Tech. As Elon Musk and the Big Tech billionaires increase their control over government institutions, we must all ask ourselves a troubling question: are we witnessing the end of democracy? With a free trial, you can watch the full talk NOW at https://iai.tv/video/the-new-ruling-class-yanis-varoufakis?utm_source=YouTube&utm_medium=description Capital triumphed over democracy a long time ago. Today, following the Financial Crisis of 2008 and the rise of the platform corporations, a new type of capital has emerged. Command capital is crushing the remnants of our democracies and giving rise to a new, technofeudal ruling class. Further still, the start of the second Trump administration in the United States has demonstrated, in worrying clarity, just how much control and influence the Tech Giants wield when it comes to geopolitics. #technofeudalism #elonmusk #democracy Economist, politician, and best-selling author Yanis Varoufakis argues that a radical reassessment of property rights over machines and data is the only way for us to confront this new ruling class. Join him for a journey from the feudalist economy of medieval Europe to the modern era of Tech Giant supremacy, exploring how companies like Google, Tesla, OpenAI, and Amazon extract value and capital from their users. The Institute of Art and Ideas features videos and articles from cutting edge thinkers discussing the ideas that are shaping the world, from metaphysics to string theory, technology to democracy, aesthetics to genetics. I get the feeling that western oligarchs have decided that democratic systems are too limiting for their businesses and plutocracy is much more profitable.

I truly wish that I kept my head in the sand. The more I understand, the more afraid I am. The entire WEST is like the Titanic; too big to turn, too slow to react, in denial about sinking and there aren't enough life boats for everyone.

When I was 20 years old I never got why the older people around me were so pessimistic about the future. Now I am 35 and seeing how fascism and digital dictators are being welcomed with open hands by so many people makes me understand. I am very pessimistic about the future now.

Tecnofeudalism is a proper name for this nightmare.

It amazes me that ordinary people on all sides of politics really believe that real AI - when it is eventually real - will be designed and deployed to make their lives better. The rich and the powerful will own it and they already know how easy it is to exploit technophilia to make themselves more rich and powerful.

How ironic is to get an Amazon ad at the same time he was talking about Amazon's fiefdom.

I have only just learned about Yanis Varoufakis' work and I have been blown away. This framework truly demystifies our outrageous socio-political realities. Focusing merely on fascism, capitalism, colonialism feels like bandaid solutions and I've felt like I was still missing the big picture for so long. Thankful for this!

I love Yanis. He puts into words what I've been noticing and feeling in my bones for at least 10 yrs.

I see all this too, Yannis. Please do a part 2 with some suggestions on what to do about it.

Yanis is brilliant and correct. The thing is, rich people love this system anyway, they don't see anything Yanis said as evil or bad, they embrace it.

So long as it remains possible for individuals or private interest groups to amass limitless wealth and power, oligarchy will remain inevitable.
