Suchitoto: Do Not Go To El Salvador Without Visiting

Old, Alone and Far From Home
Open in YouTube
Suchitoto is one of the most beautiful and atmospheric towns in El Salvador… a place of cobblestone streets, colonial architecture, quiet plazas, and far-reaching views. But this beauty carries history. During El Salvador’s civil war, Suchitoto was a strategic and contested town… a place shaped by conflict, fear, and displacement. For a time, it was known less for its charm—and more for the danger that surrounded it. Today, the town tells a very different story. In this video, I spend two full days exploring Suchitoto… visiting the historic center, churches, viewpoints, museums, art spaces, and hidden corners that reveal both the town’s past and the calm, creative spirit it has embraced today. This is a walking tour through one of El Salvador’s most preserved colonial towns…and a quiet reminder of how far it’s come. If you’re curious about Suchitoto— or about how places shaped by conflict can transform over time— this is what two days in the town really look like. Music provided by Epidemic Sound. I am a couple of years into full-time travel. I choose destinations that are located all around the world and show what those places are like from my perspective. I subscribe to the slow travel method and I make all of these journeys by myself. Solo travel can be extremely liberating. I invite you to see the places that I have been. That might give you ideas about where you would like to travel and possibly, areas that you want to avoid. If you are content staying at home, this channel will serve to provide you with a window onto the world. Either way, you will see some amazing sights, every time you click play!

I love your videos and the way you explained it’s essential history. I was in Suchitoto 3 years ago and love the vibe. I stayed at La Tejada and love it. Thank you for sharing your experience while it brought me the lovely memories I had. I can’t wait to go back ❤

Your videos are the best orientation for mature travelers by far!!! I just returned home from an 18-day adventure around El Salvador, including a few days each in San Salvador, Ruta de los Flores, and Suchitoto. While everyone has their own experience, you captured the essence of why to go and what to look out for. I will continue to recommend your site highly. Muchas gracias!

It is too bad that you weren't able to experience the square while you were there, but it still looks like you had a great visit! I love the look and history of the cobblestone streets, but they look like they might be tricky to walk on, and definitely lead to a rough ride in a vehicle!

Suchitoto looks to be an interesting place. Thanks for taking us along by means of another great video! I will say, I had to rewind before believing you said the beer was secondary.......how many beers did you drink at that point? Doesn't sound like you 😀

I am from a town in Guatemala, on the border with El Salvador. My grandmother used to make horchata with pumpkin seeds and rice; it was also very delicious. 👍

one thing that was never clear to us: even at the Barcelo, they put the little trash can by the toilet. Is El Salvador a country where ALL of the tp is supposed to go in the little trashcan? We did not do that--but the etiquette on this was never made clear to us (never told to us by any sign or guide). We went to Ecuador and I think they made it more clear with little signs that all of the tp was supposed to go in the little trashcan.
